Embarking from a quiet countryside location in the beautiful Lake District, 50 guests from the UK, Netherlands and Switzerland tackled some of the steepest roads in Britain, set against a stunning verdant backdrop of mountains and lakes bathed in perfect sunshine and offering an incredible driving experience.

The weekend’s base was the Langdale Hotel, near the charming towns of Ambleside and Windermere, which provided top-class service and excellent hospitality for the event. It was here that the opening activities took place, the welcome reception being the occasion for the briefing and road book handover, followed by a three-course dinner in the Stove Restaurant, over which BMW i Pure Impulse members old and new chatted and prepared themselves for the next day’s driving highlight.

The first part of the scenic drive, starting bright and early, led the members to Ambleside and then northwards, ending at Cockermouth Golf Club for a warm welcome and mid-morning snack of tea, coffee, homemade cakes, biscuits and the more traditional scones with clotted cream. The route went via the magnificent Honister Pass, a stop at the Honister Slate Mine and the first taste of winding roads and craggy outlooks.

The second leg took the guests down to the magnificent Ullswater Lake, onward to Kirkstone Pass and back down to Ambleside via ‘The Struggle’, another steep and winding road. The reward was a leisurely three-course lunch at the Daffodil Hotel & Spa accompanied by wonderful views of Grasmere Lake. Panoramas were also on offer during the afternoon’s hike – the more strenuous version of which had a few hundred-metres gradient but opened out onto spectacular views over the lakes and countryside.

Once back at the hotel, the members relaxed before reconvening for the final evening’s farewell, a thank you from Sophie Chiappe, BMW i Marketing Manager (UK), and dinner once again in the Stove Restaurant. This was also the occasion to announce the winners of a fun competition: the guests who came up with the most creative photo of their BMW i8 twinned with the weekend’s gift of a colourful toy sheep, the signature example of Lake District wildlife. Departing with this furry four-legged reminder of a great driving experience, the guests left the lakes behind and headed home.
