DESIGN HOTELS™ – TROUTBECK.
It has been a country inn and retreat for over 250 years, and American writer Lewis Mumford wrote of the property that a “continuity of spirit binds together the families that have occupied Troutbeck”. For hotelier and current custodian Anthony Champalimaud, it was also important not to dilute the history of this now fully renewed rural escape in upstate New York. For example, behind its warm-coloured stone walls and beneath its heavy slate roofs, wood panelling, grand fireplaces and reclaimed antiques are joined by such later-day charms as the modern, crimson-red canopy beds, Frette linens and copper-topped bar with retro-pink-vinyl barstools. From its dining room serving farm-to-table cuisine and cosy library, to the walled garden, pool and fine natural surroundings, there are plenty of welcoming spots to find sanctuary – just like the leading creative minds of centuries past.
