ASIA. SHANGHAI, CHINA.

HIDDEN CORNERS OF THE FRENCH CONCESSION.

Shanghai’s French Concession was once the city’s most elegant place to live. Aside from the French community, rich Chinese trading clans as well as wealthy merchants from all over the world used to reside here. Elegant art deco buildings, former mansions of the high society and lane-house-style dwellings, so-called “Lilongs”, are waiting to be explored.

A walk through the secret alleyways of the former French Concession will conjure up the spirit of colonial times. You’ll learn all about celebrities and where they used to live, work and play. It was also in this area that Shanghai’s underground scene started to thrive. The Canidrome – the former dog racecourse – was once the center of gambling, along with brothels, opium dens, bars and eateries. The Green Gang, together with their mafia bosses and high-ranking politicians, ruled this place of decadence.

During this tour, you’ll discover the different faces of the former French Concession, relax with a nice lunch at one of the many hidden restaurants, and visit one of the most successful commercial hubs in China.
